Edson Marine makes and sells these nautical stars for boats. Since we’re approaching a patriotic weekend, this seemed like a good time to post about the memorial featuring these stars in Friendswood, Texas. The Veteran’s Memorial is a stainless-steel American flag. It’s 8 feet tall, 16 feet wide, and sits on a granite base. Some nautical influence away from the water.

This report from CNN puts my footwear of choice in a bad light. But I am going to ignore all evidence to the contrary and continue to believe the flop is the perfect shoe.

A new study from the University of Miami shows that flip flops are bacteria factories. They can harbor up to 18,000 different  bacteria, including e coli and deadly strains of staph.

This does not bode well for my summer.

The National Geographic Channel is kicking off the Expedition Great White series this Sunday at 9:00 pm eastern. Chris Fischer, who roamed the world for ESPN2′s “Offshore Adventures” show, along with Capt. Brett McBride, lead a crew on a scientific expedition to catch and tag great white sharks. From the looks of the video teasers, it looks pretty entertaining, and maybe even educational, hence the plug here.

A little something pointless for anyone bored on a Saturday evening.

…Is a view I plan to be enjoying in a few weeks as I stand on the bow stalking bonefish in South Andros. I’m going as part of FibFest. What is Fibfest? It’s a bloggers summit, of sorts, and I’m attending for the purposes of science and education and not for any reasons of self gratification in the form of screaming flats runs. Stay tuned for some pontificating about skiffs.

The flying boat on display for auction.

Well, you’re actually too late. This 93-year old flying wooden boat sold for $506,000 at auction yesterday, according to the New York Times.

I meant to post about this yesterday in case you were in the market, but at least you can read about it after the fact.

I for one am extremely pro-flying boat and would like to see more modern flying boat applications. Couldn’t you make a lightweight model with cold molding or a composite fiberglass via resin infusion? Let’s make it happen.

Kim Kardashian, the reality star famous for, well, for being famous, tweeted pictures of herself on a boat, in a bikini, and somehow this became national news.

In the grand scheme of things the real question is, “And we care, why?”

But people do care about celebrities and the minutiae of their lives. It’s why, as of this posting, she has 3,228,284 Twitter followers. That’s over 100 times more followers than Doctors Without Borders, an organization that actually makes a difference in the world. And almost as many followers as the President of the United States.

Regardless, we have some hard questions. Whose boat is it? What kind of boat? Is there a captain? Is it a chartered boat? Gas or diesel? Do they ever leave the harbor, maybe for a run over to Bimini? The world will be better off knowing such things.

UPDATE: The intrepid Diane Byrne has the answer, “the yacht is the 150-foot Utopia III, built by Trinity Yachts. Original name was Lady Linda.”
